About climatesince.com

: climatesince.com tells you whether a day in a US city or county was the hottest, coldest or wettest since some year, and which year, from public NOAA records.

What the site covers

Each city page ranks the newest day in the city's daily weather record against the same date in every earlier year. Each county page does the same for NOAA's average over the county, across the contiguous United States.

Each day also has a page of the daily records set across the country, and the wire lists them one line each. Every page states the date of its data.

Where the numbers come from

Every answer is our own calculation from public NOAA records: each city's threaded daily record and each county's gridded average.

  • City records: the threaded records of NOAA's Regional Climate Centers, which join the stations that have served a city over the years, with NOAA's GHCN-Daily station data as a check.
  • Records and forecasts: the National Weather Service's daily climate reports, record reports and forecasts.
  • Counties: NOAA's daily and monthly county averages.
  • Places: the US Census Bureau's county and place files.

What a record means here

A new record is marked provisional until the National Weather Service's daily report for the station confirms it, and recent values are preliminary until NOAA's final data. Our answers are not official records: the National Weather Service announces those in its own reports.
